Hips were swaying across the Deep South when Atlanta’s best-loved funk band, Abby Wren & What It Is, released its debut album, Secondhand Swagger, on Thursday, June 28, 2012.

Listeners could not keep their toes from tapping to the head-bobbing grooves presented in this ebullient jaunt through Funk, Rock, Blues, & Soul expertly crafted into a nine-track album. Nate Kieser of Indie Music Reviewer Magazine hails the band as, “…a five-piece funk/blues/soul powerhouse with a front women who can melt your ears off and a saxophone player [who] squeals!”

Formed in 2009, Abby Wren & What It Is spawned from late-night jam sessions with local Atlanta favorites Abby Wren (vocalist) and Julian Scott Bryan (drummer/multi-instrumentalist). Demos attracted Darren Michaels to fill the bass chair and Atlanta newcomer, Dane Skelton, to add his sophisticated sax prowess. Merely months before tracking the album, guitar dynamo Jason Beard completed the quintet. The combined experience and chemistry of this band filled Secondhand Swagger to the brim with hook-laden, soulful, southern-fried funk tunes that dare you not to move to their groove.

With accolades from local fans and music reviewers alike, Abby Wren & What It Is has decided to spread its funk past the confines of the South. A music video of the album’s opening track, “Favorite Day,” is already in the can and due for release in the coming months.

Regional shows are in the works for the fall of 2012, and stints to other areas of the US are on the immediate horizon. Be sure to check for new shows at www.abbywrenandwhatitis.com
