Cardella DeMilo - The girl from Watonga, OK

Cardella (Thorton) De Milo, born in Watonga, OK, in 1930, (Singer/Actress/Business woman),  began her dream and became a songstress and toured the U.S., Hawaii and Internationally.

Her singing has graced stages throughout her tours in Japan, Canada, Alaska and the Carribean. She leaves a treasure of achievements in the music and filmworld with appearances in several movies by prominent producers, Norman Lear, Eddie Murphy, Jamaa Fanaka and Ted Turner.

Television was a part of her territory which included her popular shows such as "Sanford & Son", her latest, "Pariots of Silicon Valley" where she portrayed Ella Fitzgerald. She has recorded, written and composed songs for several labels. She hosted and awarded many at the "Parsian Room" for 10 years plus, and served as a columnist for "The Scoop" and several newspapers in the Los Angeles area. Ms. De Milo's hit recording of "Gimme Whatcha Promised Me" for Sir Paul McCartney's MPL Communications company, was released by Claridge Records and D-Town Records in 1982, (available on youtube.com/scorpiontelevision).

Ms. De Milo was presented a Resolution by California Governor Jerry Brown for her 11 years of appearances in the penal institutions, in addition, she received a Congressional Award from Congresswoman Diane Watson as well such dignitaries as the late Honorable Mayor Tom Bradley, and Senator Bill Green.

In 2001, Cardella was recipient of "Mother Of The Year" award by The Rose Cancer Society.  Her presentations helped launch the careers of Barbara Morrison, Reynaldo Rey, the late Comedian, Robin Harris and others of note. Cardella has shared the spotlight with many greats, Lionel Hampton, Little Richard, B.B.King, Duke Ellington, Linda Hopkins, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Josephine Baker, Carmen McRae, Gloria Lynne, Etta James, Big Joe Turner, Don Ho, and Ella Fitzerald from the 50's throughout the 90's. Cardella De Milo has gone full circle.  A Trailblazer for many to follow, left hope and dreams to inspire, and warmth of her love to embrace, those who loved her.

Editor's Musings:
Welcome to another month of songwriting resources at your fingertips. :) Here's my obligatory mention of the weather: I love the Fall. There. That's done. :D
A few things to mention before I get into the meat of things. First off, I'm tremendously proud to say that my sister Raina has released a CD called Solstice. There's more information about her and how you can purchase the CD in the Artist Spotlights area below, but I wanted to mention it here too because ... well... she's my sister. And if I can't menton things like that in my own newsletter, where can I mention it, right?
Secondly, SongU.com is having an open house celebrating their 10th year (wow, how time flies!) - and you can sign up for 30 days free (no credit card required!), to take up to 5 do-it-yourself (DIY) or instructor-led online courses, attend feedback and mentoring sessions, pitch songs and more. VisitSongU.com and enter the redemption code TEAMSU166 to take advantage of this. But you have to do it before September 30th, or you'll have missed the boat! If you're serious about being a songwriter, SongU is definitely one of the BEST things you can do for your career. There's more info on this below in the Musical Notes section too.
Thirdly, I should also mention that The Great American Song Contest has a brand spankin' new website! It's looking really great. You should check it out when you get a chance. :) They're on their 14th annual contest - AND they actually send you a written evaluation of your work with every entry. Pretty cool.
And now - on to the lucky raffle winners! Remember that there are instructions below on how you could be one of those lucky folks too!
The raffle winners this month are:
  • Alice Hesselrode from Shokan, New York, has won a downloadable version of Rhyme Genie, a dynamic rhyming dictionary featuring over 300,000 entries and 30 different rhyme types.
  • Russell Jones, from Arnold, Maryland, has won a copy of Virtual Studio Systems' Lyricist software.
And once again, as I've mentioned many times before (you guys should have this memorized by now :D) if you'd like to be considered for a raffle prize yourself, have a look at the various prizes offered at the top of The Muse's News webpage, decide which prizes you'd most like, and email me with your top two choices along with your mailing address so that I can get the prizes to you. Yes, it's really that simple. :) (And yes, the mailing address is kinda important. I promise it won't be used for any other reason than to send you your raffle prize - and to mention your approximate location in the notice of raffle winners you see above here.)
I wish you every inspiration for the coming month and beyond.
All the best,
--Jodi

Ke$sha - "Die Young" Single from Billboard Magazine

The new single sees the 25-year-old returning to the formula of her past hits: club-ready dance beats, a chorus that invites a sing-a-long, and plenty of sleaze. The lyric video released alongside the song splits its time between black-and-white shots from the Japanese underground and psychedelic text-laden imagery.

Congress won't likely touch Internet Radio Fairness Act until after elections

Congress won't likely touch Internet Radio Fairness Act until after elections

Posted by

From Issue:

The webcasting industry-backed Internet Radio Fairness Act, introduced to both chambers of Congress on Friday (see RAIN here), made The New York Times this morning, and journalist Ben Sisario presented the complicated manner in as clear and straightforward a way as we've seen.
"Willing buyer, willing seller. Those four words would seem innocuous, but in the world of Internet radio nothing is more contentious," read the opening paragraph.
As we reported, the bill would move noninteractive webcast services from the "willing buyer, willing seller" standard to the one used to determine rates for SiriusXM Radio and cable radio like Music Choice(known as 801(b), which is also the standard that record labels are happy is usedwhen the rates for royalty rates they pay to songwriters and publishers are determined).
"That model would let the panel of federal judges that set the rates consider evidence both on the value of the music and on the effect the royalty rate would have on the industry overall. Pandora and its supporters believe that standard would yield lower rates," according to The Times. "Record labels and artists... believe that the existing rates are fair and accuse Pandora and others of wanting to deprive copyright holders of the income they deserve."
Congress will likely wait to deliberate the issue until after the national elections in November ("and probably into the spring," wrote Sisario).
We highly recommend Sisario's concise and even-handed treatment of the matter, and recommend you share it with listeners and clients. You can see it in The New York Times here. Finally, for a clear and entertaining analogy that demonstrates why "willing buyer, willing seller" can't work, please see RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson's "State of the Industry Address" from last week's RAIN Summit Dallas here (you can also launch the audio from the box in the right-hand margin of RAIN) -- scroll ahead, it's near the end (about 20 minutes in) of the speech.
