Biography:


B. Taylor’s single, “Let’s Get this Party Started,” is the first official release from his forthcoming CD, One Life To Live . Co-managed by Pete Moore of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles fame ( multi-platinum recording artist, writer and producer of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and others), Moore also is the executive producer on the project . This is a first for a classic Motown artist such as Moore to be that involved with a hip hop artist. In addition, Motown Legends Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder will surely support Moore in his collaboration with B. Taylor. Moore’s intention is to mix the Motown Sound with hip hop to incorporate a new sound for the genre which is desperately needed according to the feedback from major players in radio and in the rap community. The music on the album combines the Motown soulful sound with energetic beats of hip hop, appealing to all demographics, similar to the way of the Motown music tradition of the past.
B. Taylor has an amazing and unique combination of talents as a musician by virtue of the fact he plays four different instruments. He is a writer, producer, and performer who has a diverse background, which includes growing up as the son of a preacher. He was a college athlete, a sailor in the Navy, and a member of the All Navy Team-USA basketball squad. His diverse background, unique talents and extensive list of accomplishments provide him with the ability to cater to numerous fans with varying tastes in music across a vast number of genres including Hip Hop, R&B, Gospel, Rock, and Pop. As a result, he will appeal to a variety of demographics and age groups, vastly expanding his potential market demand.

The path to success is no longer labeled

"The path used to be clear -- you got a major-label deal, they got you on the radio, you toured and recorded albums. all that has changed, really, and the new path is . . . well, what is it? And where does it go?" - Steven Scott, guitarist/singer

This quote appeared in the Los Angeles Times in an article by Geoff Boucher entitled, "The path to success is no longer labeled". I thought it was worth highlighting because the paradigm for bands and artists has changed so much in the last 15 years.

Today, the power of both record labels and radio stations has been partly diminished by the global stage the Internet affords musicians. Music labels once controlled the distribution and traditional radio stations provided the main artery that lubricating the distribution lines.

Well, that's not the case anymore. Bands can put their music online for people to hear or buy without regard to music labels, radio airplay, or any other restrictions from the old ways. But, it's still not easy: success requires self-promotion, touring, word-of-mouth, and a bit of viral luck.

If you are an entertainer, musician, artist, or band and you've had some success with the new opportunities of the Internet and the ability it's given you to build a fan base, I'd like to hear about it.

Finding a music distributor is crucial if you want to see your album in the shops, whether you're a band planning to self release your album or a label trying to get several albums out there. The task of finding music distribution is not always easy, however. This guide will help you get started and give you some clues as to what you should look for in a distributor.

Get the Ball Rolling:

Trying to get a distributor on board is not much different than trying to get signed to a label. Instead of sending your demo to a record label, you are instead sending your "demo" to a distributor. Of course, when you are looking for a distributor, your demo is usually a finished album, or in most instances, your demo package will contain several releases. To decide which distributors are going to get packages from you, you need to do your research just as you would if you were trying to choose a record label. Check out your record collection - many albums list the distributor in the liner notes. Independent record stores can also be a great resource - get someone on the staff to tell you which distributors they buy from and what they think of them.

Once you have made your short list of ideal distributors, start making calls. You'll want to introduce yourself and get the thumbs up to send in a package. Larger distributors will have front line staff running interference for their label managers, but be persistant and try to get through to one of these managers so you have someone expecting your package. Distributors often have label managers who have varying music tastes so that the distributor can work with a wide variety of labels - make sure you get through to the person who is most likely to be into the music you are pitching.

Make Your Pitch:

Now, about that pitch. What you will send to a distributor is essentially a promo package, but you should tailor your package so that it specifically addresses the information that distributors need to know. What exactly is it that distributors need to know? They want to know that they will be able to convince record stores to stock your album, so they want to know the album will be adequately promoted. Here are some things you will want to include in your pitch to the distributor:

•An extensive set of press clippings for all of your releases
•Radio playlists if the album has received any radio attention
•Press/radio campaign plans including details of any impending press coverage (these plans can either come from you or a professional PR company)
•Tour dates or information about any tour plans underway
•Details of future plans for the label or the band - upcoming releases, etc
•And of course, the music

Increase Your Chances:

Sometimes, the reason finding distribution is so tough is that you are not really "ready" for it yet - you don't have a framework in place to be able to take full advantage of distribution and move quickly if one of your releases really takes off. The following things can increase the attractiveness of your release/label with distributors:

•A self release can be a tough sell to a distributor, especially if you don't have any plans to work with other bands in the future. This kind of set up can make your label look like a vanity project instead of a legitimate business. You'll create a better impression if you can show that you are interested in more than self promotion.
•Promotion is extremely important to distributors, so having a professional radio plugger or PR company can help you case quite a bit. If you don't have the money to shell out for a pro, then create your own detailed promotion plan and make that available to the distributor (be specific about which publications you will target, how you will approach the web and radio, etc)
•Unless an M&D deal is on the label, distributors want to know that small labels will be able to deliver the product. A working relationship with a manufacturer can be extremely helpful when you're trying to get a distributor on board.

Seal the Deal:

When a distributor is interested in working with you, all that is left is to work out the specifics of the deal. You'll need to figure out the following things:

•How many of each release the distributor wants to start with
•How they will re-order stock
•Who will pay for manufacturing
•How many promos the distributor needs to work with
•How long before the release date do they need promo materials
•What price the distributor will sell the album to the stores for (this can change per release)
•What cut the distributor will take from each sale
•How you will be paid, when you will be paid, and how often you will be paid
•How you will get sales sheets
•Will the distributor have any authority to put the album "on sale" without your permission, and/or how much can they cut the album price before needing to seek your permission
Of course, this list is not exhaustive - your personal circumstances will determine exactly what needs to be covered in your deal as well as the specifics of the deal. The most important thing to remember is - get it in writing!

Longtime D.C. radio personality, Donnie Simpson, did his last show on WPGC-FM Friday morning. ABC 7 in Washington reported: "It was a morning full of emotion from his fans, friends and family...The phone lines were also buzzing with calls from Toni Braxton, Blair Underwood and Tavis Smiley." According to Sabrina S. at gather.com, "He is 55 years old now and the station says that his taste in music is the reason for the ratings to be down the toilet. The station is apparently looking for someone with more creativity that can attract a younger audience."

Korean Popular Music Presented for the First Time at MIDEM in Europe

With the export of Korean television drama series to China in 1996, the geographical reach of Korean popular music and films have expanded to the broader South East Asian region including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc. The explosive popularity of Korean popular culture in China and South East Asia has led many Asians to build an emotional connection with Korean singers and actors, even to Korean people and the country itself to the point where many have started learning the Korean language or purchasing Korean products. The craze for Korean popular culture and preference of Korean products has been dubbed 'Korean wave' by the international media.

With the increasing interest in Korean popular music, Korean actors and singers are fueling the Korean wave, making visits to countries all over Asia such as China, Japan, Thailand and aggressively marketing themselves in the local markets. In particular, the craze for Korean dramas that ignited the Korean wave moved onto Korean popular music, with both the music and singers gaining tremendous popularity throughout Asia.

There are various genres in Korean popular music including ballads, dance, R&B, hip-hop, teuroteu, etc. However, it isn't a particular style of music that is at the heart of the Korean wave, but the individual idol or idol groups themselves. A typical 'idol group' in Korea consists of artists in their teens and are comprised of four to as many as thirteen members. Some of the leading idol groups are Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SS501, Wonder Girls, Big Bang, etc. They are actively releasing albums and holding concerts and interviews in Korea as well as in Vietnam, Japan, China and the Philippines, playing an pivotal role in broadening the popularity of Korean popular culture. In particular, girl groups showed great momentum in 2009. The Korean media went as far as to sum up last year's Korean popular music trend, "The Year of the Girl Groups". There are currently ten actively performing girl groups, comprised of a total of fifty-five members. Korean idol groups gain interest and popularity from the general public through their unique personalities and difference in style of music, and are becoming a force to be reckoned with throughout Asia. Additionally, more and more singers are looking beyond Asia, actively broadening their base to penetrate into the US and European market. Wonder Girls is a prime example of a Korean idol group that has made a successful debut in the US. Signed by of JYP Entertainment, Wonder Girl is the first Korean group or singer that achieved the incredible feat of making it into the US Billboards' "Hot 100" at 76th place with the single. Following in the success of Wonder Girls, Korea's two other leading groups are making debut in Europe in January 2010 at a country showcase titled 'K-Pop Night' in MIDEM, the world's largest music industry trade fair. Girl Group, f(x) and hip hop group, Epik High will be representing Korea and performing live in front of international music insiders and media from all over the world as well as event organizers and local music lovers in Europe at the global music festival to introduce and raise awareness of Korean popular music. f(x), a five-member girl group with excellent singing and dancing abilities, was created from the very beginning with the international market in mind. Their first debut digital single, 'LA chA TA', a catchy pop dance number features hip hop groove and electronica vibe.

Having debuted in 2003 with the single 'Map of the Human Soul', Epik High is a group of highly regarded artists with a large, loyal fan base that writes both lyrics and music as well as produces all their music. Having already toured in the US in 2009, they have set their goals to enter the European market in 2010, and are sure to put on a charismatic performance during the MIDEM showcase and introduce their various music genres.

K-Pop Night, the Korean showcase extravaganza, will be held at 9 p. m. for ninety minutes at the Acajou hall, Martinez Hotel in Cannes, France on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010. There is no doubt that it will be the perfect opportunity to experience the Korean wave in Europe.

The music industry in China has significantly changed over the past couple of decades, from a tightly government-controlled propaganda pipeline into an increasingly powerful and sophisticated economic sector. Spearheading the way in China's entertainment industry is Kenny Bloom, music veteran of over 30 years, and Founder and CEO of VisiTek Holdings, Ltd. Born in New York City, Mr. Bloom, at age 56, has accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime, and he has no plans of slowing his pace. To say that his list of accomplishments is impressive would be a gross understatement.

A winner of the Lincoln Center Award for Music Achievement at age 15, Bloom attended both Julliard and Manhattan Schools of Music Prep Departments. He joined Atlantic Records in 1977 (a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group) and launched KB communications in 1984, one of the first entertainment marketing companies. He formed a joint venture with China Film (China's film monopoly) in 1988 and secured the China license for the Warner Music library, which led to the first foreign owned PRC record company since 1949. Over the years, Bloom went on to produce numerous radio shows, television programs, concerts by internationally renowned artists, soundtracks, and Broadway plays. He is widely recognized as a major player in the entertainment industry.

One might wonder if Bloom would be ready to ride on his reputation for a while, coasting through the years to come after having such an illustrious career. But nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, Bloom is moving faster, striking harder with a bold strategy to become a leading content producer. Leading the charge is MOGO, a video site covering the emerging independent music scene in China to the young, hip (undeserved) urban music consumer.

I had an opportunity to interview Mr. Bloom regarding his past, and his vision for the future. It was one of the most enlightening, thought provoking, and inspirational interviews I've ever had the pleasure of doing.

You've had over 20 years experience in the Chinese music business, beginning with the launch of Warner Music China. What are some of the unique characteristics that have shaped its development?

For one thing, massive piracy. The only business left now is ringtones and live shows. That said, there are more artists now then every before. 20 years ago there were half a dozen big pop stars and 4 rock bands. Now there are scores of pop stars and well over 300 working rock bands.

So what's sustaining that growth in the face of piracy?

Basically, live shows. The entire industry is going through a global transition. China is no different in that regard.

There's been a lot of talk about the recent WTO decision opening the Chinese market to more Western entertainment, including music. The RIAA reaction to the decision was to state: "Enhancing the ability of the U.S. creative community to do business in China will generate needed revenue and jobs to the U.S. economy." This seems to fly in the face of the piracy problem. But having said that, do you believe that the decision will at least result in an increase in the international repertoire's share of the overall market?

China's music market has a 98% mandarin language repertoire. It's what they like. The WTO decision is certainly not going to change the musical tastes of the Chinese consumers. And why should China embrace western music in a language they don't understand. Does the West embrace Chinese music? That's a totally open market. This has been an inane concept for quite some time, that every market has a pent up demand for Western culture. In a way, it sends a very disturbing message that "your culture is not as relevant".

Let's discuss the latest western invasion in China - Google's oPhone vs. Apple's iPhone, China Mobile vs. China Unicom... While the iPhone launch in China thus far has been disappointing, it is turning into a new platform being seized by indie bands and labels to release content and manage their fan base. How will the smart phone impact the Chinese music business?

It will be a long time before smart phones are in the hands of the "average" Chinese consumer. They are just too expensive to have a huge impact outside of business applications.

But, the Chinese are super-status oriented and there is an upper-middle urban class. Why, when these products are launched in China, would they not be successful - especially with 400 million mobile users?

Even with 400 million users, you are talking about a relatively small percentage of the population who are upper-middle urban class. Out of the total population, maybe 3% can be classified as such. And they're not necessarily listening to music, certainly not Western music.

Pepsi has been making big moves in China with their nationally televised Battle of the Bands "Vox Rock" and launch of their music label QMusic. Is Pepsi really serious about supporting the independent Chinese music scene? And if so, is this a model that will have legs in China (i.e., might we someday listen to Tsingtao's latest buzz band)?

It is essential that corporate sponsors support the music industry. We are now seeing more of it focused on rock and hip-hop. But we also need local media to embrace those musical styles in order to build the consumer base. Otherwise, sponsors won't be able to quantify their investment in music that is outside of the mainstream.

Isn't QMusic much more than sponsorship? They're talking about developing and launching new bands, like Starbucks Hear Music.

Let's see what they do. It's still too early to make judgments as they have not yet started their operations.

I have one final question for you. Mogo is something of a 21st century MTV-like pioneer in China. You are creating original and professionally produced WebTV content (not user-generated), in support of the emerging independent scene (art, music...). That's difficult enough in the West. What are some of the unique challenges you face – the consumer, the government, advertisers?

It's China's own home-grown music TV station and all parties have been very supportive. The biggest challenge we are facing is finding qualified staff. Every company has problems finding experienced workers. Don't forget, the modern era of China is only 30 years old with most of the development coming in the past 10. The word of the day is "patience". It will all happen, but it will happen on China's terms.
